A village at the foot of Mount Ciremai, Kuningan, which became the birthplace of Indonesia as a nation. After the Proclamation of Independence, the Netherlands still did not recognize Indonesia as a sovereign territory. It was here that Indonesia was recognized for the first time, albeit only for Sumatra, Java, and Madura.

Diplomacy was the key. Words have always been weapons. And it was here that it was etched in stone: Madura is not Java. If the Dutch had upheld the agreed-upon treaty, then Indonesia would only have been Java, Sumatra, and and Madura.

In late 1946, Indonesia was finally recognized as an independent nation by the Allies.
